VLC

VLC is a mediaplayer that can play back both audio and video in almost any format. If you need a mediaplayer that can play back your mediafiles without any needs for additional codecs, then VLC will be a excelent choice. It plays back medias like DVD, CD, SVCD, MP3, AVI, WMA, WMV, MP4, Wav and so on, in addition to other formats like DivX, Xvid, AC3 and DTS that would often require you to download their respective codecs.

Another big selling point for VLC, is that it is probably the best software for playing back damaged media files, and it can play back unfinished mediafiles while they are being downloaded.

VLC stands for VideoLAN Client, and was originally part of a packaged solution together with VLS, or VideoLAN Server. It was intended for streaming media over a network from server to clients, but now the server side is included in VLC, so that there is only one edition available. But you can still use VLC to stream media over network just like before.

If you are using Ubuntu VLC, is already available to you in the 'Universe repository'. Click the Linux-download link below to see a page that tells you how this works.

If you are using a edition of Windows older than Windows 2000, you'll have to download version 0.8.6, newer versions doesn't work on older Windows systems.
