CCleaner

CCleaner was previously known as CrapCleaner, and is a piece of software that cleans out your computer. During normal use, Windows fills up your computers harddrive with lots of useless clutter, files and information that will never be needed again. Some software may be installed, but when you uninstall, not all files are removed. And as time passes by, more and more files and registry-errors starts to make your system slow and faulty. This is where CCleaner may be a good help.

Screenshot CCleanerIt also removes information, temporary internet files from all the most common web-browsers. A temporary internet file is a web page that your browser stores on your computer, to make it appear faster the next time you visit that page. Usefull when you visit that page a lot, but it could eventually clutter up your computers harddrive with loads of unused and worthless files. CCleaner also has a utility for uninstalling software. Not all pieces of software are as good as we would like when it comes to uninstalling itself. Some would like to keep certain pieces of information on your computer, even after you think you've uninstalled it. CCleaner does this a little bit better, and may remove those files. It could also check what programs your computer starts at startup, and may help identify problems you have starting up, or may explain why it takes so long.

If you are concerned about your computers security, and keeping your personal files private, you can use CCleaner to overwrite files that you delete. Most people think that deleted files are removed from your computer, but this is not the case. The computer only "forgets" where they are, and will overwrite them when another file takes up that area of your harddrive. CCleaner can automatically overwrite the file immediately for you, making sure nobody can access information you thought were already deleted.

CCleaner uses several "layers" to determine what files are OK to delete, and should not delete any files you might need. So you should be able to feel confident in its choice. However, you will always have to take the final decision before any files are deleted.
